Do I need a storm door?
You might! Installing a storm door can be helpful if you have frequent visitors, brisk or wet weather, a drafty front entryway, or simply like to look out your door without swatting bugs or fearing security issues. A modern storm door is an energy-efficient and functional addition to your home—some even come with doors for your pets!
Are storm doors energy efficient?
Yes. Most high-quality, energy-efficient storm doors can come with Low-E glass technology, double-paned windows, or laminated safety glass to help keep the temperature inside your home static, especially during fall and winter. They can be a great addition to a main door, especially if it’s older and lacks insulated windows.
What is the difference between a storm door and a security door?
The difference between a storm door and a security door comes down to their primary purpose. A storm door is meant to protect your front door from the weather and improve insulation. It usually has glass or screens you can swap out, so you can let in fresh air while keeping out rain or bugs. It’s lightweight and focuses more on making your home energy-efficient and comfortable.
A security door, on the other hand, is designed for home safety. It’s made of stronger materials like steel or iron and comes with reinforced locks to help prevent break-ins. While it might have glass or screens, too, it’s much sturdier than a storm door. So, in short, they help with weather and ventilation, while a security door gives you extra protection.
Where are storm door closers installed?
The pneumatic closer on a modern storm door is often installed at the bottom, but it can be moved to the top if preferred. However, depending on the door model, the door’s wind chain may be in the way if installed on top, so relocation may be required to install the closer properly.
Are storm doors outdated?
Storm doors aren't outdated, but their use has become more situational. In older homes or places with extreme weather, they still serve a practical purpose by protecting the main door from the elements and adding insulation. New storm door replacements are often better insulated and more durable, so traditional ones aren’t always necessary.
That said, many people still appreciate storm doors for the extra ventilation during mild weather (when you can swap in the screen) and the added protection for their main door. So, while they might not be as common as they once were, they’re definitely not obsolete.
