Q: How do I fix a garbage disposal?
A: Garbage disposals do fail, but the more common issues are a tripped overload protector, and a jam. Examine your disposal and find the reset button. Turn off the switch, use the reset, run the water, and see ‘turn on’ the switch. If it works, your problem is solved.
If you hear a hum, but it’s not spinning, it is likely jammed. A bone, or something else, is caught. Turn off the switch. Locate the hex key that came with your disposal (often taped to the side) and insert it into the slot in the center underneath the disposal. Rotate the disposal drum back and forth until spinning freely and try it again. If it works, even if it jams again, you know the issue. Now, break it free again and remove the object that’s been jamming it.
