Mr. Handyman, $aving you Money!
This is the time of year that homeowners consider what their priorities are for their home in the new year. Maintenance and repair are ongoing concerns when you own a home, and some upgrades may be in order if the home is starting to show its age. A back splash can really dress up a kitchen, and many other home improvement options are available to dress up other parts of the home.
Homeowners may also be looking to make their home more efficient; saving money and doing good things for the environment in the process. With that in mind I thought I’d recap some things that can be done around the home to both save on water and energy costs.
- Repair water leaks. A single dripping faucet can waste over 200 gallons of water a month.
- Replace shower heads with low-flow heads and replace faucets or the aerators. Low-flow shower heads can reduce your water usage by 20,000 gallons per year, and you save energy by not having to heat the water saved
- Caulk around windows and doors to reduce air infiltration. Add door sweeps and weather-stripping. A 1/8” space around your door is like having a brick size hole in your wall
- Install energy efficient compact fluorescent, or LED, bulbs. Just one bulb alone can save $30 in electric bills over its lifespan. Just 5 bulbs could save you 50% of your annual lighting bill when compared to traditional incandescent bulbs
- Install shades, drapes, or awnings to block light on hot sunny days and keep cooling costs down. In colder times, opening the drapes allows the sun to warm the room. This is old-fashioned and low tech, but it’s surprisingly effective.
- Replace your HVAC filter regularly. If it cannot freely move air it cannot efficiently heat/cool your home efficiently
Many of these projects can be done by the homeowner and will start paying immediate dividends.
