Small Holes

In your drywall repair kit, you should find a fiberglass mesh patch. Take this patch from the adhesive patch kit and place it over the hole in the wall with self-adhesive mesh tape.
Next, you'll need your wall putty knife and joint compound. Apply the compound on top of the patch and use your putty knife to spread it over the hole in the wall in a crisscross pattern. Thin out the compound on the outer edges to blend it in with the wall and create a flat surface.
Once the patch has dried, come in with a second coat of compound, if needed. Sand down the compound, apply the appropriate wall paint, and voilà! In no time at all, your entire wall is like new again.

Medium Holes

A slightly different process will be used for medium-sized holes in the wall up to 6 inches.

To start, cut out a drywall patch from a piece of drywall. The height and width of the square patch should be 2 inches larger on every side than the hole in the wall.
Use a carpenter's knife to score the back of the drywall patch one-inch from each side.
Snap away the cut sections of the drywall, but leave the paper intact. This will be needed later.
Place the drywall over the entire hole in the wall that needs to be fixed. Trace the gypsum board section of the patch onto the wall, excluding the paper edges. Use your drywall saw to cut out the tracing, making a new hole.
Next, joint compound should be heartily applied to the back of the paper border section of the drywall patch. Then insert the entire patch into the new hole in your wall, pressing down the paper, so it's flush with the wall.
Apply joint compound over the new square until it is flush with the wall.
Apply a second coat of compound if needed and once it’s dry, sand it to create a clean edge. Finally, apply a coat of wall paint to finish, and just like that, your hole in the wall is no more!

Large Holes

For fixing holes in the wall larger than six inches, you'll use a similar method to that of the medium-sized hole, but with a different application method.

Like the process of mending a medium hole in the wall, start by cutting a square of drywall slightly bigger than the hole in question.
Trace the entire patch over the hole in the wall with a pencil.
Use your drywall saw to cut out the traced square.
Next, attach furring strips, which are thin pieces of wood, to the inside of the hole in the wall on the left and right side, screwing them in place.
Place the patch inside the wall and attach it by screwing the drywall screws into the furring strips.
Joint tape should then be applied along every edge of the patch. The joint tape will prevent the patch from moving and prevent cracks or other drywall damage from occurring.
Smooth the joint compound over the patch with a putty knife. Let dry and apply a second coat if needed. Sand down, apply a final coat of paint, and you'll never know there was a giant hole in your wall!
