The season brings many rainy days, which flood ant homes and force them to search for new elevated ground. It is also the beginning of the swarming season for termites.

How To Keep Your House Pest-Free

The majority of pest activity occurs outside of the home during the spring; however, some pests look for warmer and safer places with dependable food sources, such as our homes, to build a nest. Fortunately, there are several ways to eliminate the conditions inside your home that appeal to pests. Be aware of seasonal pest patterns and use the following simple and effective solutions to help prevent pest problems before they even occur.

1. Clean Gutters

Traditional, open-top gutter systems are common places for many critters and pests to settle and build their nests and homes–especially when they are not cleaned frequently. Debris like rocks, sticks, and leaves left in the gutter accumulate over time and make it easy for pests such as birds, chipmunks, squirrels, mosquitoes, mice, and other critters to live in the gutter system.

Pests that live in your gutters can potentially cause costly damage to your gutter system and home. Carefully clear debris from your gutter and follow up with a hose to flush the gutter with water. Wear thick gloves to protect yourself from potentially harmful pests and sharp debris.

2. Seal Cracks & Gaps

Inspect the entire exterior of your house and keep an eye out for cracks in the foundation, loose siding, and missing roof shingles. Bugs, mice, and other pests love the small, unsealed gaps where electrical lines and pipes enter your house. These gaps can be sealed with copper mesh, coarse steel wool, sheet metal, mortar, caulk, or expanding foam insulation to prevent pests from entering.

3. Seal Doors & Windows

Repair any warped or broken doors and windows and replace any worn-away weatherstripping. Replace doors or windows that do not fit properly or close tightly and securely. Be sure to repair or replace any rips or tears in screens to keep pests from sneaking in through these gaps.

4. Secure Dryer Vent

For pests looking for a warm place to nest, a dryer vent is one of the easiest ways to get inside your home. Examine dryer vents to ensure the damper isn’t stuck or broken off. There should be a tight seal between the vent and the wall so pests can’t enter the house.

5. Clean Drains

Gunk and debris tend to accumulate in sink and floor drains which can attract pests and become a breeding site, especially for small flies. Regularly inspect and clean all drains in your home, including those located in the laundry room and basement.
